A Porthleven Winter: What To Do

Porthleven is known primarily as a summer holiday destination, but that doesn’t mean it’s a winter write off. There are plenty of good reasons to visit the picturesque harbour village this winter. First and foremost, of course, is the stellar luxury self catering Cornwall available at Niche Retreats. So what else is there?

Winter is a great chance to enjoy many great offers at local eateries, such as Amélies Bar & Grill, located at Harbourside. There they have a wonderful array of “Winter Warmers,” including different special offers on each night. Go on a Wednesday and enjoy a buy-one-get-one-free offer on pizzas; Thursdays offer a delicious and juicy steak dinner with wine for 2 people for the princely sum of £22, and Fridays serve up a starter and main course for just £16 — it’s value that’s difficult to beat. Booking in advance is highly recommended.

Porthleven has become known as something of a foodie village, and therefore we recommend any visitor to take time to explore the local offerings. The majority of them are open all through the winter months, and offer a warm, safe haven from the winter storms.

Another great winter option is to journey up to the very nearby historic town of Helston and discover more about local heritage at the Helston Museum at Mark Place. Gain fascinating insight into the lives and history of the people of Helston and the Lizard area. The museum is free to enter, and opens from 10am to 4pm on Monday to Saturday. Its fantastic displays are augmented beautifully by their mezzanine gallery, which also hosts local art exhibitions and workshops.

A highlight of local heritage is exploring the history and recovered artifacts pertaining to shipwrecks, something for which the area was infamous in the past. Many tragedies of the 19th Century inspired the work of people such as Henry Trengrouse, who pioneered life-saving technologies to aid those in shipwreck incidents.

If you’re happy enough spending some time in your comfortable and cozy Niche Retreat, however, then you may well be content to simply kick back, and take in the breathtaking views of the winter storms bashing their waves on the coastline. Mother Nature’s Cornish frenzy is really a sight to behold (from a safe distance, of course). Explore our website to learn more.
