The Best Harbours to Visit in Cornwall

Cornwall is a county with an astonishing and far-reaching maritime heritage. It therefore will come as no surprise to many that it is also home to many of Britain’s most historic and beautiful harbours. Next time you come to stay with us in a Niche Retreat, consider a day out to some of these amazing places and share in the seaside beauty of Cornwall.

Porthleven

It may sound obvious, but let’s start closest to home. Porthleven’s harbour is right on the doorstop (almost) of your Niche Retreat, and is not only a great place to take in the town’s peace, quiet and beautiful ocean views, but also a great place to start when looking for a local eatery for a tasty lunch or a romantic dinner.

St. Ives

Head north from Porthleven and you’ll reach what many would argue is the real jewel in the Cornish coastline. St Ives is an award-winning UK destination, and often stuns visitors with a feeling of old English charm in the setting of a sub-tropical paradise. The harbour in St Ives was once dependent on fishing, but is now home to a wonderful array of local shops, restaurants, pubs and cafes – it’s the perfect day out for the family. Next to the harbour is a golden beach perfect for bathing and taking in some glorious sunshine.

Penzance

Famous for its singing pirates, and being the most westerly town in Cornwall, Penzance has always been something of a national gateway. These days, its harbour serves as a key transport point for those wishing to travel the stunning Isles of Scilly, with regular ferry operations still underway. The town’s famous promenade is known for having taken the brunt of Mother Nature’s wrath over the years, but today Penzance remains a symbol of resilience and charm.

Mousehole

Just south of Penzance is the charming harbour of Mousehole. This small town has often been praised for its retention of old charm and beauty through its long and eventful history. The harbour area’s huddled houses, narrow streets, galleries, gift shops and restaurants are complemented by a wonderful sandy beach nearby that is ideal to take in the breathtaking ocean views.

Falmouth

Those interested in visiting a really global harbour should put Falmouth at the very top of their list. This great town is home to the world’s third largest deep-water harbour. It is also flanked on all sides by Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, including the Helford and Fal Rivers, the Southwest Coast Path, all of which are magnets for all manner of tourists. The harbour itself is steeped in the history of heroic maritime exploits – it’s hard to turn any corner without stumbling across some great local tale.

All the above are within easy striking distance of your holiday cottage in Porthleven and Caerhays, Cornwall. Should you wish to travel a little further, the whole of Cornwall’s stretching coastline is jam-packed with more beautiful harbours and seaside towns. Book your next Cornish stay with us and come see for yourself.
