Description
When a picture speaks a thousand words savour it; let all the spectacular glory of this dramatic building sink in. The Triumphal Arch on the Holkham Estate offers truly unique accommodation.
Opulent oasis
Tranquility and spectacle combine. Designed in the 18th-century to impress, it continues to achieve this superbly today. And while completed before Holkham Hall itself and intended to draw visitors through and on to the North Norfolk coast, nowadays it is all quiet. All yours. So much so, this stunning Grade I listed building is perhaps one of the most unusual and most romantic boltholes for couples.
Quirky accommodation naturally comes with pros and cons. Here they include stone spiral staircases and stunning vistas. Not forgetting privileged access to the Holkham Estate for the duration of your stay.
Come on in, through the west wing and you’ll instantly see how adeptly it has been transformed to offer luxury amenities and accommodation. It’s a far cry from its roles in times gone by as a sleeping place for shepherds or ad hoc accommodation for family.
The ground floor presents a fabulously light kitchen-diner. Compact yet complete, facilities are sufficient for rustling up light suppers and breakfast, hot and cold. Why not, when there’s scrumptious Norfolk produce available at every turn in neighbouring villages. Light pours in to this area from windows on two levels and the full-glass internal door is a design gem.
Make your way steadily up the original stone spiral staircase. Your path will first cross a shower room and loo. But you’ll be distracted, more importantly, by the spectacular bedroom that greets you at the very top of the stairs. Here you are, right above the arch. Your sprawling bedroom with treats in each line of sight.
Your king size bed has been magnificently positioned. Come dawn chorus, or afternoon graze, your view from here is blissful panoramas up and down the avenue - because there are windows on both sides. Whichever window you choose up here, whichever direction you cast your gaze, solicits enchanting views. Back in the room, the deep seated sofas calls you to repose. The original open fire begs you burn a log on it - you can. But will you first be able to resist the lure of the roll top bath - it would be rude not to, wouldn’t it.
A stay at The Triumphal Arch will excite you both, and any canine friends you bring along too. They’re very welcome. While there’s no enclosed garden, there is extensive acreage you’re invited to explore as long as man’s best friend is on a lead.
Beyond the paths and woodland of the Estate, Holkham National Nature Reserve promises yet more stunning outdoor exploration. Surrounding villages and beaches like Holkham and Brancaster will each delight in turn. For a romantic getaway, this is a rather special place to be.
