Rural restoration
Inland just a little from Cornwall's northern shores, The Old Sunday School shatters all preconceptions of what might be behind the front door. Once a Methodist chapel, the exterior promises light and vast space, but you’ll never guess at the contemporary catches covering the interiors. With an industrial slant on the renovation, this could be a kid-free property (no under 6s advised). Grown ups can kick back and not worry so much about the open tread staircase.
Enter into the hip kitchen diner. Heavy with Scandinavian influences, clean lines, stainless steel backwash and sliding doors to elsewhere in the house. Looked down upon by the mezzanine sitting area, it’s a sociable space come brunch, lunch or dinner. The decked area just outside the front door calls for Pimms o’clock around an evening barbecue as the sun goes down on an adventurous day exploring North Cornwall. Where the font may once have stood the industrial staircase leads to a vast living area on the first floor with comfy sofas and TV. Your evening’s entertainment is sorted if catching up on the latest movie release or streaming series is on the cards. Alternatively, get the woodburner roaring and settle in with a good book or test your wits with a board game or two. All in the surrounds of fabulous finishing touches.
Spacious and light with little more than countryside around, from the slate frontage to the edgy interiors, this isn’t showy style, it’s simple, smart and ultimately relaxing. Rural Rumford gives you access to many a country walk. Two miles from St Merryn and nearby sandy beaches your beach time won’t be dented. And for a food feast, Padstow is within easy driving distance.
