Oozing urban chic with a country twist and more than a courteous nod to the Victorian roots of this building and its home town, you’ll love this sharp and sassy take on seaside apartment living.

Seaside sassy

The Garden Suite is a rather understated title for this impressive and impeccable retreat for two in North Devon. While Damien Hirst may already have laid claim to being the area’s artistic talent, this apartment puts Ilfracombe on the map for interior design.

Stepping into a flagstone heavy hallway the drama begins and your eyes will be drawn through the doorways and towards the stairs. The soft, pastel blues and moody blue-greys create an achingly warm welcome. Leave your bags at the door a while and explore. You may lose each other before you’ve even found the kettle.

The sitting room with its elegant parquet floor and sweeping bay window with sash openings is a vast room that calls for inviting friends for tea. Should you need to get the wood burner roaring, you’ll love the just-for-two sofa and the background of the stag wallpaper framing the fireplace. Patio doors open onto a pretty garden for a sniff of freeze before you wander down to the shore. The kitchen combine French country chic with those heavenly flagstones and you can just image the kettle whistling or the smell of coffee brewing first thing. A lovely room to ponder and plan the day ahead.

Within a brief wander is the centre of Ilfracombe with its trappings of a Victorian seaside resort and step-stopping modern art additions. There’s a healthy cafe culture here, plenty of seaside smells, boat trips to Lundy Island and an amply sized sheltered beach where colourful boats bob with the tide.

Bedrooms and bathrooms

The Garden Suite is a ground floor apartment and along the hallway you’ll find a beautifully decorated bedroom. The wooden framed double bed looks out onto the garden with access to it via the French doors. The stunning bathroom with its Metro-style tiles is a wet room with shower that wouldn’t be out of place in a hip city apartment.
