Description

Standing quietly in the foothills of Cadair Idris, this tastefully refurbished 18th-century former farmhouse is surrounded by fields, woodland, and the mountains, and captures all that is warm, peaceful, and welcoming about Wales. Whether you’re a climber, hiker, mountain biker, or you’re just plain old trying to get away from it all, this charming self-catering cottage will nestle you in the kind of comfort that will make you feel alive again.

For outdoor enthusiasts

Located just a mile and a half from the market town of Dolgellau, Penclogwynau makes for a great base for outdoor enthusiasts and holidaymakers alike. Featuring a stable door leading out to the garden, exposed-beam ceilings throughout the house, and a cosy inglenook fireplace with wood burner in the sitting room, the cottage clearly understands the richness of its heritage and traditional Welsh farmhouse roots. Balancing this rustic charm are tasteful, modern luxuries like underfloor heating and comfy seats, both in the sitting room and in the reading area. Top this all off with the serene views from every window, then imagine being able to come home to this after an invigorating day out. On cloudless evenings, dine and have a few drinks al fresco. Afterwards, gather around the fire pit and watch the stars, with the burbling sound of the nearby stream in the background.

Bedrooms and bathrooms

On the ground floor of the cottage is an underfloor heated wet room with WC. Then, cosily tucked under the gables, the bedrooms in this wonderfully peaceful house offer heart-stirring views across fields, woodland, and the Snowdonia hills and mountains to the north. The king-size master room features exposed original roof trusses and beams, and further benefits from an en-suite shower room. The next bedroom also boasts exposed beams and a king-size bed, with the further advantage of being able to convert the bed into two singles, so as to accommodate a larger family or group of friends. Both rooms share the convenience of the family bathroom, with its large claw foot bath, charmingly set under more exposed beams and a low, sloping ceiling – the perfect place to let the remnants of the day soak away.

Practicalities

There is extensive level off road parking areas adjacent to the property. A tumble dryer is available in the garage. The garage also provides secure storage for your bikes. We can provide a high chair, stair gate and a cot, but ask that you please request these on booking and that you bring your own cot linen. We welcome two dogs at this property but please note they must remain on the ground floor only. Pet owners should be aware that the cottage is surrounded by sheep pasture.

Special Note: Please be aware that the stairs are steep and narrow and therefore not suitable for guests with limited mobility.

Reviews

Lovely peaceful clean property.

Mrs Dawn M,

Excellent all round

Mr Nicholas H,

Great little place up in the hills

Mr Andrew B,

Everything was thoroughly thought about to make guests comfortable, well informed and welcome.

Mr Terence C,

We were impressed with the excellent panoramic tour of the property which we saw on the 'Best of Wales' website prior to choosing this lovely cottage. Penclogwynau was a delight. Idyllically and tranquilly situated, it has beautiful 360 degree views, a pretty and extensive garden and inside it is attractively renovated to a high standard and very well equipped. We have many self catering holidays and Penclogwynau is very high on our list of the best holiday cottages we have visited. We shall be returning next year!

Mr Mike M,

Wholeheartedly recommend the property and Best of Wales.

Mr Adrian M,

Just perfect. The cottage, the scenery, the views, the space around the cottage. Everything you need. Twice now in less than a year, we will be back

Mrs Donna H,

Cottage is perfect in every way. Area quiet, bird life great. Visit from a hare. The George hotel at the estuary is fantastic, been beautifully refurbished. Food excellent as are the staff and they love dogs in the bar area. Well worth a visit. Tranquillity of cottage first class.

Mr M W,

The most perfect accommodation in the most perfect location...hence our return! Beautiful, stunning, high spec, tidy, clean, cosy, comfortable, perfect in all ways for a family of four!

Craig from S,

It was a very beutiful cottage with stunning views. The standard was very high.

Previous Customer,

Absolutely perfect, would not change a single thing. Was perfectly wonderful thank you.

Mr A H,

What was not to like, one of my best holidays to date...home from home. North Wales was a stunning area and will be back to explore this year.

Christina from C,

The holiday cottage is a lovely base to explore this wild beautiful part of Wales. Dolgellau has some quaint pubs & lovely restaurants with the beach a short drive away. Isolation was exactly what I was looking for with a lovely feel to the property. Snug, warm & very cosy. The roll top bath was a big hit due to the foul weather we experienced but then again it is winter & would expect nothing less. Lovely touch though. Very pleased with my choice & I will be returning. Thank you.

Joanne from E,

The cottage was a real home from home in a lovely secluded place with far reaching views. The interior is superb, and the log burner was welcoming on a night. Our Leonberger Lexie really enjoyed the secure gardens and had lots of space to run around in, my wife and myself really enjoyed the peace and tranquility and the stargazing at night. From start to finish the whole holiday run smoothly and many thanks to the your staff for good communication etc also many thanks to the owners for there communication and returning my camera charger which I had left behind. Highly recommended.

Mr Phill H,

Our cottage was set in a stunning location very peaceful and spotlessly clean. Outdoor highly recommend for a relaxing away from it all break.

Mrs Lindsey C,

We really enjoyed our stay here and found the location ideal.

Mr Simon N,

A very special cottage in spectacular surroundings. Easy to book online.

Mr J E,

We had a brilliant week in every way. The cottage was lovely, very high standard of cleanliness and had everything we needed for our stay. The views from the cottage were breathtaking and the area is extremely beautiful all helped by the glorious weather. The whole experience was first class and the service from start to finish with The Best of Wales was excellent. Thank you, Kate and a Brian Walker and Alfie the border terrier!

Mrs Kathleen W,

High quality holiday cottage with excellent facilities, finished to a very high standard and in a wonderful location. The level of equipment was very good, we were very happy. We always holiday in the UK, but never visit the same property twice as there are so many available. However, we have re-booked this property for 2019 as we loved it so much. The cottage has pretty much everything you need, and is excellent for a dog as the garden is secure and big enough for a dog to run around. The location is excellent for exploring the area from Aberystwyth to Anglesey and there is so much to do. It rained every day of our last visit, yet we still enjoyed ourselves and look forward to returning for a longer stay next time. Best of Wales have been excellent. Professional, knowledgeable. They are extremely helpful and very friendly. A pleasure to deal with. If I had a holiday home to let out, they would be my choice. I cannot fault them. The booking process is simple and hassle free.
