Description

Make yourselves at home in this store of Kent brewing history. Steeped in history, this superbly sympathetic oast house conversion is a fascinating family holiday home in the grounds of an ancient manor house.

Ancient abode

The imaginative and impressive conversion of Washenden Oast retains an external facade that defies its modern interiors, while some rooms sublimely absorb the curves of the oast roundel in their layout.

The travertine marble flooring throughout the downstairs is both glorious and practical as once was this building’s function drying the hops for Kent’s brewers. And it’s perfectly toe-toasting in the cooler months thanks to underfloor heating. The original uprights in the sitting room blend perfectly with the modern floor to ceiling windows and glazed door that pour light in and draw you out into the grounds. The kitchen and dining room is simple and bright with light and continues the themes of original exposed beams drawing the eye all the way to the apex of the roofline.

From beer to wine, the village of Biddenden is 1.5 miles from the house and is now home to the renowned Biddenden Vineyard. Producing English wine, cider and fruit juices you’ll be well stocked on local produce for your self-catering stay. Vineyards tours and free tastings are available too. Continuing the serenity, pootle along the Kent & East Sussex Railway to 16th century Smallhythe Place and Stocks Windmill, both of which will have you reaching for the best camera you have to hand. Beyond Kent’s rich history and wines, is a fast route to a France day trip via Ashford or fashionista favourite McArthur Glen Outlet.

Bedrooms and bathrooms

You’ll find one double bedroom with en suite wet room in the roundel on the ground floor. The stairs steer you from the sitting room to a glazed mezzanine landing overlooking the dining area and from here the two first floor bedrooms and family bathroom are reached. The king size master bedroom is also in the oast roundel, while the third bedroom offers twin beds with views across the fields. The bathroom is fully equipped with a deep bath and separate shower.

Practicalities

There is a small rear enclosed garden with wonderful views across the paddocks - home to the owners' horses and donkeys during the year. Acres of fields with footpaths. Please be aware there are un-fenced ponds near the Oast so children must be supervised at all times when outdoors.

Reviews

Very comfortable, and as described on the website.

Mrs Helen S,

The property was excellent. The fittings, kitchen, bedding, crockery etc were perfect for a family short stay. WE even managed to cook and serve Xmas lunch for 12 people without an effort or the need of extras - with the exception of borrowing a trestle table!

Mr Tim W,

A real gem. Thoroughly recommend this property for anyone looking for a jewel in the kent countryside.

Mr Clive C,

This is a wonderful holiday home in a really peaceful setting. We couldn't wait to get back to it each day. The owners could not have been more helpful and friendly.

Mr Austin C,

Very well equipped and in a quiet location close to lots of interesting Tourist attractions.

Mr Trevor K,

Good location and excellent property. Would return should we visit the area again.
