That rarity when a fine, fine house opens its doors to guests. One of Orford’s most important homes is a standout holiday house beckoning you to wander through its rooms and gardens savouring its grandeur.
Stately, yet absolutely not stuffy, The Great House is as it says on the tin - one of Orford’s great houses. At more than 200 years old its 2017 refurbishment restored the former glory of this architecturally historical gem while piling in all the trappings of 21st century luxury living. This Grade II listed home has retained many of its original standout features and welcomes you to repose and entertain in much the way its original residents may well have done. Thoughts to have been built as a shooting lodge for the nearby Sudbourne Estate, no expense was spared then, or now. For some added glamour, luxury yacht charters are available by arrangement.
There are two heavenly comfortable sitting rooms, a formal dining room for up to 15 guests, and a Billiard room for those post dinner party antics. The kitchen and breakfast room have a country rustic feel ensuring a relaxed feel and plentiful room to spread the weekend’s papers and coffee cups. Wander out onto the terrace from here and the beginnings of 1.5 acres of elegant and informal gardens - bring the croquet set, won’t you. Look up and across for unrivalled views of both Orford Castle and the nearby coastline. Orford town, all its history as well as its modern artisan producers like the sinful Pump Street Bakery, are on your doorstep.
Depending how large your entourage, this could be the perfect large group retreat for extensive broods, or one, two or three families holidaying together.
Bedrooms and bathrooms
The Great House sleeps 12 guests in 6 bedrooms, the 4 largest bedrooms with Emperor beds, 2 of which are zip and link beds which make into Austrian twins, the remaining bedrooms have king sized double beds - do remember to state which configuration of beds you would prefer well before the start of your holiday.
Looking to a greener future in 2021 , the Great House has installed a Zappi EV car charging point
Type V 2 - 22kw 3 ph - untethered. The unit is wall mounted on the LH side of the garage and will require the guest to provide their own power cable connection, which is unique to the model of their car. Cost per car for a long weekend stay £15.00. Cost per car for for a week's stay £25.00. To be advised and the amount added at the time of booking to allow access to the unit during your stay.
Please Note: The property is a family home and is not suitable for parties. There is a security deposit of £1,000 payable on this property that will be returned within 10 days of your stay. The owners have built a small self contained annexe in the corner of the garden which shares the main gate into the property for pedestrian access only.
The house and grounds are exceptional and provided a perfect backdrop for our family reunion after Covid. The weather has been amazing and enabled us to make the most of this incredible part of the world. It was wonderful t come back to this house after a long day exploring. We enjoyed our stay immensely - thank you.
Beautiful property with everything thought of for comfort too. Extremely comfortable beds and hot and powerful showers. The gardens were a delight. Ideal for a discerning family or group of friends who enjoy cooking and eating and walking together. Faultless!
What a wonderful house. Fantastic for our party with six teenagers. Billiard table and croquet sets were well used. Suffolk has not disappointed and we hope to return soon.
A really special house - we all loved it! Thank you! We had a wonderful week in beautiful Suffolk, celebrating all being together after lockdown, and a fantastic degree result for one of us. I personally will never be any good at Kubb or billiards for that matter, but who cares, I had fun trying! Best wishes.
Our best moments during our stay: Running along the coastal path with family members - exhilerating! A special place for bonding and being unlocked with our special family. A wonderful holiday in an incredible house. We enjoyed every second and have created many memories. An amazing experience and special time spent with the whole family. I have absolutely loved the snooker table and have slowly improved my skills. The memories made here will last forever. A marvellous place to spend time with family. Such a relaxing village. Don't miss The Meare at Thorpeness.
What a wonderful house, fabulous location and beautifully decorated, a great place. August 2017
A thoroughly enjoyable and relaxing week in a stunning house. We've loved it! August 2017
What a wonderful place to spend our Mothers 80th Birthday. Having holidayed to Orford for 32 years and walked past the "Great House", how amazing to actually stay here. Fab paintings as well. Thank you. December 2017
