Galloping into contention in the heart of a popular racing town serving up a full suite of historical and sporting connections is Gallowa’s Cottage. Quintessentially cosy and characterful, the odds are on and the going is easy.
Sympathetic to its history and to its location, Gallowa’s Cottage has been superbly refurbished for guests visiting Middleham and this part of the Yorkshire Dales. This is Yorkshire’s horse racing country and the horse racing references in the cottage abound for those who know the sport yet are subtle enough not to bother those who don’t.
You’ll want to sink into the sitting room sofa and curl up in front of the Victorian fireplace while the kettle boils or the Wensleydale and wine ease you into an evening of quiet time. The country cottage style kitchen has all you’ll need to rustle up a delicious supper if the call of the town’s friendly pubs don’t call you first. The window seats in each of the bedrooms draw you to gaze upon the town from a bird’s eye view. Imagine life in this bustling market town in times gone by, then and now you can watch the horses head between stables and gallops on a daily basis.
Into the pretty courtyard garden and you’ll find the hot tub for soaking away a day’s efforts in the Dales and a new summerhouse for a peaceful afternoon in the sunshine or an idyllic breakfast spot. A pet friendly property, the cottage welcomes three furry friends to explore the countryside with you too.
A history of horse race training and Grand National winners aside, this pretty market town also has connections to Richard III and the town’s imposing castle put it on the regal map many moons ago. There’s really no shortage of sites and experiences before you even consider pulling up your socks and wandering off in your walking boots.
Bedrooms and bathrooms
Don’t be deceived by the cosy cottage vibes of Gallowa’s Cottage, it is superbly spacious presenting four beautiful bedrooms over two floors, sleeping seven guests. On the first floor is the king size master suite with en suite bathroom, a second spacious bedroom that you can have as either a super king or as twin beds, and a single bedrooms with another of those window seats. The second floor completes the sleeping arrangements with a comfortable twin.
If you want to get straight into that holiday spirit, why not order a welcome hamper or prepared meals from local cafe bar and restaurants, Penley's. Situated in the market place in Richmond and Leyburn, Penley's offer a friendly and relaxed service with an excellent variety of freshly prepared food cooked to order using locally sourced produce where possible. They now provide a great range of prepared meals, hampers and picnics which can be delivered to your holiday cottage for your arrival or collected from the cafe. For more information and to place your order see Penleys website.

What a fabulous cottage. We really enjoyed spending Christmas here with our family. The welcome hamper so kind and we loved the cake especially! You decorated the house with such care and we really appreciate the decorations and tree. Your cottage has everything we wanted and needed. You have made our third Christmas in England a memory to be cherished. From all of us, thank you so much!Guy Family, Florida - 28th December 2018

Gallowa's Cottage was an excellent retreat for our family and pet. It has everything you need and the town of Middleham offers plenty to do by just stepping out the door. The property is ideally located for exploring the North Yorkshire Dales. Mr Colm O'Keeffe - 4th September 2018
Gallowa's Cottage was excellent, first class in every aspect and Middleham village was charming, interesting and historic with the added bonus that the racehorses passed our windows regularly and the castle was fascinating. I would strongly recommend.Sue Cariss - 29th August 2018
This was a superb property - in over 35 years of holidays and booking properties all over the country, it is by far and away the best we’ve ever stayed in. It was superbly equipped and had everything we needed. We wish we could have stayed longer, but I have no doubt that we will return for a family holiday again. Mrs Kathryn Hill - 21st August 2018
“The photos don’t do the beautiful cottage justice. A perfect place to stay near the Yorkshire Dales. A minutes walk to Middleham centre where there are great pubs and places to eat. The cottage is very clean and full of everything you need. Very comfy beds and pillows. Beautiful garden for eating outdoors. Thank you for a great week. ” - 9th August 2018
Absolutely delightful place to stay and plenty of room especially for 4 teenagers and 2 dogs, beautifully decorated and well equipped for large parties, our welcome pack was wonderful after a long drive. Middleham has a lot to offer as do the surrounding towns without having to trek to far. A trek up Pen Hill is highly recommended with great views, Castle Bolton is well worth a visit as is Aysgarth Falls. Forbidden Corner and Middleham Castle are great for a day out locallyThe Kings - 3rd August 2018

We have had a fabulous week at Gallowa's Cottage! The kids loved the den upstairs with the secret cupboard - great for playing hide and seek. We have enjoyed several barbecues throughout the week in the garden - listening to the church bells - such a relaxing environment. The dogs really appreciated the doggy treats - thank you! And the fruit cake - amazing! So much to do around here - Forbidden Corner, Catterick Races, Hawes, Aysgarth Falls, Brimham Rocks. We have done so much in the four days we were here. We have had a most wonderful stay in this well equipped beautiful home. We can add nothing but positive comments: wonderful comfy beds, warm and cosy, extremely well kitted out, every home touch thought of. We were able to catch up with family who live locally, had five days of fab walking, taking in both Coverdale and Swaledale without using the car once! Thank you for all the little touches too, the welcome back, the bath robes, the fire set ready to go.The Davison family and Rosie the Lab - 1st April 2018
We have just had a perfect weekend in a beautiful and very well equipped cottage. Everything has been thought of, and we could not find fault with anything. Thank you for the welcome pack - the cake was delicious and the dog treats were appreciated by our dog 'Rhino'. Can recommend the food at both Richard third and the Black Swan. The Blue Lion at East Witton is also worth a visit. Sad to be leaving but we will return very soon. Many thanksDarren, Dawn, Russell, Benji. Sylvia and Rhino - 9th February 2018

We absolutely loved Gallowa's Cottage! With our extended stay for several weeks we felt very comfortable and at home. The cottage was immaculate and the homemade goodies were so kind and thoughtful, even candy for my son! The beds were divine and we slept for later than we should have on several occasions because we were so comfy and cosy. The kitchen was very well equipped and we loved to watch the horses passing by every day...something we will really miss. Thank you for everything Jane and Jeremy. We would love to return one day.Melanie and family - 9th July 2017

This really is a lovely cottage- with really well thought out interior! We enjoyed the yummy cake, sweets and dog biscuit. The location is great and we had a lovely walk down to the river and the castle is fab. We really enjoyed our stay. The Keighley Family - 26th August 2016
A lovely warm welcome once we arrived from the owners who showed us around and explained things with the house and local area. Nothing was too much trouble. They've paid attention to small details like providing dog biscuits and sweets for the children. The cottage itself is very clean and comfortable. The kitchen is very well equipped. The racing stables next door is a real treat and a tour is a must for any horse lovers. Raye gave us a magical tour, which our daughter thoroughly enjoyed. There are several waterfalls in the area, Hardraw Scaur waterfall being the highest. Park at The Green Dragon Inn also sell food. We've had an amazing week here. Would love a return visit. Hopefully we'll book here again. Thank you for a lovely stay. The Senbi Family - 14th August 2016

Really enjoyed the luxury coffee- very thoughtful and I much appreciated the sweets for the children! Flowers and plants a lovely touch. All bedrooms lovely- spacious, very comfortable beds. The children loved 'the den'- especially the teddies and books (and the secret door!). Good selection of books, games, DVDs, maps, local info etc. Shower excellent in bathroom.
